Mzansi Magic has made the decision to discontinue Umkhokha: The Curse and My Brother’s Keeper as part of its “strategic evolution,” despite the shows’ strong viewership.
“These shows have brought our stories to life in a way that resonates deeply with audiences, thanks to the brilliant minds of our writers and producers and the powerful performances of our actors,” said Shirley Adonisi, Director of Local Channels at M-Net. “We are incredibly appreciative of Rhythm World Productions and the exceptional cast and crew who made these shows what they are today.” The Citizen has not heard back from Rhythm World Productions, the show’s creators. If their response is received, the story will be updated.
Umkhokha: The Curse ends in February 2025, with My Brother’s Keeper’s final episode scheduled in April. The religion-themed Umkhokha: The Curse premiered as a 13-part series and soon excited viewers, leading to its transformation into a full-fledged drama.
Both shows were appreciated by viewers, evidenced by their consistent trending on social media when they were on air.
According to the channel’s statement, this decision is part of its strategic evolution, in which canned shows will be replaced by new creations to be announced soon. “This exciting shift means that new shows will be fresh and shorter to enable more diversity of voices in telling Mzansi stories,” according to the brief statement. This news comes that local telenovela Champions’ contract will not be renewed.
