The late great actor Darlington Michaels, best known for playing Georgie “Papa G” Zamdela on Isidingo, has tragically passed away
Although there are currently few details available on the cause of his death, his departure has left sadness in South Africa. Michaels was praised for his contagious laugh, distinctive style he frequently wore gold rings and flowered shirts and his hyena-like personality.
Michaels starred in Isidingo for a remarkable 22 seasons, during which time his character of Papa G became a household favourite. There was drama off-screen throughout his time on the show; he left the show once over contract conflicts and returned with a triumph. Michaels ultimately said goodbye to his cherished character after 16 years.
After becoming well-known, Michaels disappeared from the public view, leaving his followers to wonder where he had disappeared to. There were rumours in 2016 that the actor had taken a medical leave of absence because of a health concern. He did, however, make a stunning return in 2020 when he appeared as Gap in the Mzansi Magic drama series Vula Vala. This was his last significant television appearance, even though he was back.
Michaels continued to be involved in the entertainment industry by making a number of radio and podcast appearances, one of which was a noteworthy interview with David Mashabela on King David Studio.
