Simphiwe Majozi, also known as Sbu Makhathini, has opened Sbu&Ration’s Eatery in Newlands East, Durban. Majozi, inspired by his on-screen character, has converted his passion for cooking into a real-life business, combining his acting career with his entrepreneurial ambitions.
Majozi’s character on Uzalo, Sbu Makhathini, is a troubled hustler whose story connected with the actor’s personal experiences and goals. Majozi claimed that playing Sbu inspired him to create the restaurant. “Yes, the character I am now portraying inspired me to create the restaurant. I reminded myself that I used to sell food during my tertiary days in Pietermaritzburg, so why don’t I get back into that industry and offer meals to people as I used to?” he explained.
His passion for cooking is not new; it was an important part of his life during college. “I’ve always had a passion for cooking, so iKishi lam (My Kitchen) back in Pietermaritzburg helped me pay up my tertiary education fees because there was no money, and I had to do something in order for me to complete my studies,” Majozi told CNN.
Balancing his acting career with owning a restaurant is no easy task, but Majozi has found a trustworthy partner in Cebolenkosi ‘Lacostaration’ Minange. Minange, who recently returned from Alaska, is co-managing Sbu&Ration’s Eatery during Majozi’s absence. “I’m running the restaurant with my friend Cebolenkosi ‘Lacostaration’ Minange, who recently returned to the nation from Alaska. He’s my partner and handles the day-to-day operations of the business in my absence,” Majozi explained.
Despite the hurdles of juggling a successful acting career and a new business, Majozi is grateful for the support he has received. “I just don’t know people flock into the business for food or because I’m a good actor, but I’m humbled with the support,” he stated with a smiley face.
For Majozi, who is a renowned television actress and aspiring restaurateur, the launch of Sbu&Ration’s Eatery is a momentous occasion. He has inspired both fans and fellow business owners with his journey from the small screen to the kitchen, demonstrating his adaptability and drive.
