Makhadzi, a South African singer, appears to have decided to test the waters of social media by dropping a bombshell. On a recent Friday night, the ‘Ghanama’ performer made a statement about former Miss South Africa candidate Chidimma Adetshina that had everyone in stitches—or rather, cries.
She took to her X account and wrote: “Chidimma. Chichi. My sister from South Africa. I hope she was the MC for my one-woman performance in Polokwane. Phela is one of us, reportedly.”
It should come as no surprise that her post backfired and caused her to lose her cool with the fans. When Makhadzi realised she had sparked a firestorm, she swiftly performed the social media equivalent of a moonwalk to diffuse the situation by removing the offending post.
She then apologised in yet another post, which she quickly removed as well. “I apologise, Yoo.” was her message. I had no idea how you felt. Please pardon me. But regrettably, not everyone accepted the apologies. While some internet users were harsh with her, others dismissed it as her take on playful humour.
As you’d expect, the land of Mzansi had a lot to say. @bokenza1 chimed in: “makhadzi doesn’t even read her contracts. we can’t be mad at her.” @_djmosh added, “one thing makhadzi will do is apologise.
And of course, there’s always the straightforward @bokamosomc who wrote: “how dare she say she didn’t know how we feel? didn’t she see what was happening in the past three weeks or so? mara makhadzi.”
It’s obvious that Makhadzi’s attempt at humour, or whatever it was, fell flat of her expectations. Regardless of whether Makhadzi truly had no idea how South Africans felt about Chidimma, her tweet went viral on social media, likely not in the way she had intended.
Some fans expressed their disappointment in public, while others simply laughed it off. If Makhadzi wanted people to start smiling, she most certainly succeeded in doing so. It remains to be seen if her supporters will overlook this incident or if they will continue to ignore her.
